"What really changed my mind and made me see the reality of what I was doing was when my 4-year-old daughter looked up at me and said "Mommy, I don't want you to die. Please don't breathe more smoke." It was like hitting a brick wall, she was right and I needed to not be as selfish as I was. I want to be around to see her grow up."
have been a smoker for 17 years. I was completely physically addicted to nicotine. I always felt strong withdrawls when I went even an hour without a smoke during the day. I quit for a year when I found out that I was pregnant with my daughter but I started back (why, I don't really know) and never looked back.
About 2 years ago Lockheed Martin announced a smoke-free policy where there was no smoking allowed on any Lockheed property (even in the parking lot). I knew this would be a problem for me, but I thought that I could deal with it anyway.
What really changed my mind and made me see the reality of what I was doing was when my 4-year-old daughter looked up at me and said "Mommy, I don't want you to die. Please don't breathe more smoke." It was like hitting a brick wall, she was right and I needed to not be as selfish as I was. I want to be around to see her grow up.
I also thought of how annoying it had become to smoke. There are so many places that do not allow smoking anymore and so many people that treat you as a criminal if you do (most of those people have no idea how hard it is to break the addiction). Also, I thought of the money I could save if I could convince my husband to quit too.
Lockheed Martin offered the Free & Clear Plan to it's employees and their families for free, so my husband and I decided to try it. We both took Chanitx and really liked it. Within 3 weeks of starting the medication, I was smoke free and my husband was not far behind.
We have been non-smokers for going on two years now and have changed our lifestyle so we really don't miss the habits of smoking that we once had. I asked my daughter recently if she was glad that we quit smoking and she really doesn't even remember when we smoked, so I am glad of that. Thanks to Lockheed Martin and Free & Clear for saving two more lives from the addiction of nicotine.
