In today's busy world, it can be challenging to complete all the tasks that make up a typical workday, let alone find a few minutes to take a break. Employees that do find ways to take breaks take them in a variety of forms, some of which are perceived to be less favorable than others.

When it comes down to tobacco use, tobacco users do tend to take additional breaks compared to non-tobacco users. Although smoking bans have had a definite impact on tobacco use prevalence (both inside and out of the workplace), there are still some tobacco users who will brave the elements (rain, snow, and blindingly cold wind), stand in a confined area with other tobacco users, and stare at an alley wall. Breaks and cigarettes become synonymous to the tobacco user.

These additional breaks can cause frustration and consternation within the workplace. The non-tobacco using population may express a sense of unfairness at not receiving the same frequency of breaks. This frustration manifests itself in many forms, from general discourse to a heated argument, to maybe even a physical skirmish (in rare cases).

As an employer, there are viable solutions for handling breaks in a way that supports all employees. Here are some that can be applied across the board.

Seek Employee Feedback: Allow all employees to provide input regarding the current break policy. Communicate that you will take all feedback into consideration in terms of any changes to break-related policies.

Promote Healthy Breaks: Encourage your employees (tobacco users and non-tobacco users alike) to engage in quick, healthy breaks (such as a walk around the building).

Clearly Communicate Policies: Above all else, make sure that employees are fully informed about break-related rights and regulations.

Offer Effective Resources: Keep in mind that approximately 70% of tobacco users truly do want to quit tobacco at any given time. With comprehensive assistance, many of the tobacco-using employees could become tobacco free, translating into a strong ROI for you as the employer due to increased productivity.
